POPSICLE PARTY!!

I have to say, this was one of the best parties I have thrown. Early on, I decided to check my OCD at the door. NO going overboard. NO stressing. NO party favors. NO tracking rsvps. And, LOTS of relaxing, and socializing for the hostess. And, it worked!

We started out by editing a free printable invite from Party Box Design. Go there, get one, throw a popsicle party!

In keeping with my EASY theme, I decided that the kids popsicles could be picked up at the store on our way to the party. This went against every fiber of my well-planned being. But, it worked out perfectly.

The only pops I made, were the adult pops. I used what I had at home, mixing everything from strawberries/champagne, to pomegranate wine/blueberry.

*A couple of lessons learned here: Don't cheap out on popsicle makers. It does make a difference in the ease of getting out the pops. And, the concentration of alcohol really does make a difference in the freezeability of booze. So, do the math.

I used vintage sheets for table cloths, and a menu of only popsicles and water, kept the set up and clean up to a minimum. Everyone had loads of fun!

Today, I am participating in the Gussy Sews Inspiration Workshop. The prompt this week was, "green." Of course, there is green - the color, and green - like moolah, and green - like earth friendly. But, then, there is GREEN...like that nasty little green-eyed monster!

Inspiration Workshop - Kitchens!

Hi all...I am participating with Gussy's Inspiration Workshop. This week's prompt was inspiration in the kitchen.

I am in LOVE...really, LOVE....with vintage kitchen items. Lately, my obsession has landed on kitchen linens. While hitting estate sales, and garage sales, I am always on the lookout. And, here are a "few" linens I purchased at a great estate sale in San Diego, put on by Estate of Mind.

If you live in SoCal, you should really try to take a look around Urban Barn, in Escondido! (They have a Flea Market coming up on June 17th and 18th.) They have vintage linens, and waaaaayyyyy more! Here is a glimpse...

Easter Egg Countdown

So, I've been seeing a lot of cute Easter countdowns around blogland, but I wanted one that could hang, and be reused every year. Willie and I made a trip to the dollar store, raided my stash, and came up with this...

Here are our supplies. {From the dollar store - bunny egg tray ($1), stickers/treats ($3), plastic eggs ($1). From the stash - velcro, gingham fabric, number stickers.}

And then, I realized the velcro, wasn't going to do the trick, so I swapped it out for this....

I filled the eggs before involving Willie, so they would be a surprise. Then, I put in the foam mounting sqaures, and attached the eggs like so...

I added the number stickers, and then double-checked the strength of the mounting tape.

I added a couple of ripped fabric strips. And, tah-dah! Total cost to me $5!

I used bits and pieces of tutorials from MADE and Aesthetic Nest.

School Valentine's

Willie's school Valentine's party is tomorrow (weird, I know). We did these bag toppers for his classroom friends. Playdough (of course) in each bag.

And, these were printed out, with a Chocolate-Dipped fortune cookie in the middle of each for the teachers.

Appliqued Onesies

I'm co-hosting a baby shower tomorrow for a friend I met on the first day of kindergarten - in the advanced reading group, thank you very much. And now, we live on the opposite side of the state from where we grew up, but just 10 minutes apart from each other. She is one of the busiest people I know, so I am ALMOST positive she won't look at this before the party. I found a great deal on the newborn onesies with the cuffs on the hands (If I was OPRAH, I'd give them away on my Favorite Things show!). So, I picked up a few, and got to work with some of my favorite fabric scraps - vintage and new. This is a NO PINK sort of family (that is, until she arrives and loves pink!).

We live in San Diego - Day of the Dead is BIG business down here. I LOVE it!

This vintage fabric is too cute, although I can't remember where I got it!

The hedgehog (a running inside joke in my family) is by far my favorite vintage-inspired fabric here.

Monday - a picture of the cake I make. IF it turns out close to how it looks in my mind.

Dollar Store Ornament Wreath

I have been seeing these ALL over blogland and facebook (Thanks, Nicole and Liz!). I made a trip to my local 99 cent store, and picked up a few containers of ball ornaments, and one special sparkle embelishment ornament. Then, I scoured blogland for tips and tricks, cause this just seemed too easy.

The best tip I found was to take the tops off of each ornament, then hot glue it back together. I started with a wire coat hanger, and just randomly slipped the ornaments on. They really do just fall into place! I added the snowflake ornament and some ribbon I had on hand. I love it!

Christmas Card Display

On Friday (ok, AND Saturday), I stopped by a few estate sales. I picked up a picture frame, along with about 10 other items, and swung by to pick up spray paint on my way home. Hub Dub's biggest pet peeve is my growing mound of unfinished projects. I figured the spray paint was my ticket to a safe entry of the picture frame. So, I spray painted the frame, and a couple of other items from my "to spray paint" pile, that very day! Last night, I added a few other items, and got this...

1. Cute kid meets preschool dress-up picture day.

2. Painted frame meets me with some twine, and a new staple gun.

3. Ornament balls from the 99 cent store on top of (FREE) candlesticks from said "to spray paint" pile!

Here is the frame up close, and a photo of the clothespin details. I just added ribbon, and buttons. Easy Peasy. I think I may leave it up all year long, and just swap out the clothespins for each season. My family has cute little peeps. We are always getting photos and cute photo cards to display!

We made our annual trip to the Pumpkin Patch on Saturday. Along with EVERYONE else in San Diego, we go to Bate's Nut Farm. Somewhere along the line, with "someone's" slip of the tongue, it started being referred to as, "Nate's Butt Farm." So, every year, we head out to Nate's Butt Farm to search for the perfect pumpkin, and some good nuts.

On that note....here's the shirt I made the night before, since the boys were out on a Daddy/Son date.

Apple Smiles - Halloween Classroom Treat

I have seen these cute apple snacks several places. I decided to show them to Willie recently. Slice an apple*, get out your peanut butter, and pick up some mini marshmallows! Willie has asked to make these as the treat for his classroom Halloween party.

*I learned that it would have been better to use a smaller apple, so I could actually bite into it, instead of sucking it in to my face for the picture. Because of this, and the resulting funny face (along with the crazy hair and half-off makeup), I have disguised myself. :)

$5 Sucker

This post has nothing to do with crafts, or the making of anything...other than a sucker of myself.

This morning was Willie's first day of Big Kid Preschool. Being...well, me...I needed a photo for the book(s). So, I begged, pleaded, rationalized with a 3 year old. All for this...

Yes, Mom, I can hear you laughing from here. I can feel your thoughts, and envision the birthday photo of all of my friends, and my back. Yes...I know....payback's a ...well, it's a Willie.

So, I told him I would fill that Buzz Lightyear with PEZ, and give him a quarter. And, being my child, he asked for "paper money." If this kid has learned anything, it's that I will give a lot for a photo.

And, if I have learned anything, it's to keep a $1 bill handy, so I don't lose a FIVE. We'll see if the HubDub reads my blog, because I was too embarassed to tell him about our little scam artist.

Hello...Big Boy Room!

Today is a bittersweet day for us. Willie moves from the 3 year old room to the Big Boy 4 Year Old Room at Pre-School. We love the teacher he had this year, and are sad to leave her class. BUT, we are very excited to be entering the world of Mr. Ryan's Room. That's right....Mr. I am excited to see the man angle of teaching our Little. So, we worked on a very special ~~Goodbye~~ Thank You gift for Teacher Melissa! I take ZERO CREDIT on originality for this one. There are several versions out there!

I started with some cheap, and on-hand supplies:

double-sided tape (which in the end was traded in for hot glue)

large clear vase (on hand)

hot pink ribbon (on hand)

green ribbon ($1 bin)

pink/green pencil packs (50% off $1 bin)

Mini picture frame

With Willie's help in lining up the pencils, a detour to COSTCO for flowers, writing our notes of appreciation in the "m" notebook....we got this...

Where there's a Will...

It's no secret - I love my Wills. It all started with the Big Will, aka Hub Dub. Then, we added the Little Will, aka Willie.

When I was preggers, and having that dreaded timed glucose test, I had a rough time (Did anyone actually have a good time?!)- "hiding veins," bad pokers, etc. By the time we were done, and having not completed all blood draws, Hub Dub treated me to a special lunch...."anywhere I wanted." Well, I wanted whatever was closest after fasting, so we ended up at the Chinese restaurant next door to the lab. {That sounds questionable now.}

I got this fortune cookie, and I keep it with me always...

It's also a saying my Grandma quotes often - followed by a giggle, just for me.

So, in beginning my bedroom transformation to a grey/white/yellow/black theme, I decided I needed a sign to go along with my photo grouping.

I ~~jacked~~ was given an old country bumpkin wooden sign my mom's decor had outgrown. I painted, cut out some letters on my cricut, added spray adhesive, lined up my letters, and glazed over.

Here it is, under the picture the Wills gave me for Mother's Day last year.

7. Every once in a while I need a cup of highly caffeinated AWAKE TAZO tea in order to fall asleep.

8. I HATE olives and mushrooms, but I love the flavor of olive/mushroom juices after picking the olives and mushrooms off of an olive and mushroom pizza. Just ask my husband about our third date (almost our last date), where I told him I would be good with anything other than mushrooms or olives, then promptly ordered a mushroom and olive pizza.

9. I love to get a good cry from a sad movie (by myself, witha cup of coffee, box of tissues, and blinds closed).

10. I'd spend my last dollar at a thrift store...okay, that's probably not a little-known fact.

Tie One On

This is my LAST (I think) Dad's Day craft for this year. Having used some of my late grandfather's ties in theis project, it turned out to be one I will be happy to get out every year. And, my sister will be happy to know that there MAY be a few ties left over for her...

So, I started with my pile of ties (from Rummage Sales, Grandpa, and the Dollar Tree), and a spool of white ribbon.

Then, I cut the ends off of the ties, and stitched to a strand of ribbon (taking the ~~lazy~~ easy route, NO PINNING!), like so....

Until you get....

Then, stitch another ribbon on top (I used a zig zag stitch). Hang up on your mantle (or if you live in a mantle-lacking shoebox of a condo - your entertainment center)...and be sure to add in your DAD is RAD decor found HERE!

Quick Dad's Day Decor

With Dad's Day right around the corner, and this being the first year that Willie really understands it, we have had a lot of fun making items to help us celebrate. I am really running with the tie theme. (See yesterday's Tie T-Shirt HERE.) WHERE? you ask, are we getting all of these ties? I have been picking them up here and there, waiting for the "right" project. I got all of my Grandpa's ties when he passed away, and wanted to make a lasting decoration using them. (That will follow later today.) I also picked up a TON at a few church Rummage Sales during those coveted "Fill A Bag For $X" hours. And finally, I filled in the rest with some great patterned ties from Dollar Tree. That being said, all of these projects could be made with Dollar Store ties.

So, here we go.....I started with an old shirt of Hub Dub's, a Dollar Store picture frame, and iron-on leftovers from yesterday's project.

I cut the shirt, and ironed on the letters....

And....here it is all put together, with scraps of a Dollar Store tie. I really love it!

Dad is RAD

We think DAD is RAD, so we used a few Dollar items to make a shirt for Willie, fitting for the Preschool Dad's Day Party.

Here's what we started with: Hanes shirt (Dollar Tree - worth the bin digging required); Necktie (Dollar Tree); Iron-on letters set ($1 from Big Lots, but get two for all the D's required!).

I used the back side of the tie, for the skinny tie look. Place it on the shirt for letter placement, then iron away!

Stitch on the tie...I used a messy stitch. Add tie top (at slant), and stitch. I also added on a couple of embelishments to the sleeves with tie scraps. And, here you have it!

We all scream for ice cream!

This past weekend, we celebrated my Grandparent's 85th birthdays with a good old fashioned "Southern Ice Cream Social." OF COURSE, Willie (and his cousin, Anastasia [photo to come - hint, hint]) needed a themed t-shirt!

Luckily, my sister mamaTAVE stepped in when I ran out of time to stitch on my felt appliques!

For the shirts, I bought the usual cheapie TARGET or WallyWorld plain t-shirts. I applied alphabet stickers, then used fabric spray paint to cover the letters. Let dry (almost completely), peel off letters, and voila! Then, I left mine on the dining table, with the fan on over night. Appliques were (of course) applied at the last minute!

My Birthday Gift

If you have never made a memory quilt, I strongly suggest it! After my Grandpa passed away, I made them out of his old shirts for several family members.

My sister surprised me with a great one for my birthday. I love it! Of course, I did spend a great deal of time explaining to little Willie why it is that Mommy didn't go to thr prom with Daddy!

I may have had too much fun with this project… Is that possible? It provided an excuse to get outside and kept my daughter happily busy right alongside of me. It just doesn’t get much better than that. And, the cost of the project (about $5 per basket) fit right into my budget as well. Had I been able to find a larger basket, I could’ve even used plants that were already growing in my yard, making this project even more economical. Nevertheless, out of this project I am getting an Easter decoration and a fresh supply of basil for a few months… totally worth the cost!

I know Easter is only a few days away (which reminds me, I need to go refashion a skirt into a dress for the little one….!), but if you would like one of these baskets for your own home you still have plenty of time. Here’s how you do it:

Gather your supplies of an Easter basket (I chose plastic and will explain why below), a bit of burlap, potting soil, and plants (we quickly found pansies, wheatgrass, and basil at the grocery store down the street).

Cut the burlap to fit inside and cover the bottom and sides of your basket. Put a bit of soil in the bottom of your basket, as it will get tight in there once the plants are placed inside and you won’t want a big air pocket at the bottom.

Place plants in the basket until they are pretty well squished in and you have achieved a look that suits you. Fill any gaps within the basket with more potting soil. Trim any burlap that is still peeking over the edges of the basket. In a few days, the plants should settle in to their new home and hide the edges of the burlap and the basket.

Ta-Dah! My daughter’s basket is the one on the left, and I have to admit that I am rather jealous of the way her grass falls over the edge of the basket like that… Nice.

A couple of things…

…I wish I had done this a week ago, so the plants would have already settled in nicely and look more “at home” in the basket than they do today. Sorry about that.

…I hate to buy plastic things, but I wanted to be able to leave this basket outside and enjoy it for as much of the Spring as it (I) will stand. Another option would have been to use one of the rattan baskets I already had on hand and line it with a plastic bag instead of burlap. Then, the basket could be an indoor decoration. The problem with this (for me), is that the roots could rot if the basket received too much water (which is what I tend to do, if I don’t forget to water it altogether… I’m not great with houseplants).

…If you are not sporting a green thumb, or you just don’t want to have to remake this basket every year (I am looking forward to that!), then you can buy a few sprigs of fake flowers while you’re getting your basket at the dollar store. You will still spend about the same amount of money, and you can store your ready-made basket year, after year, after year…

…You may have some wheatgrass leftover. If you do, plant it for your favorite indoor cat. She will thank you for it.

This is a great project for kids, too. After all, kids like getting out in the sun and getting their hands dirty (me, too!). My daughter enjoyed making one to bring to her grandparents’ house on Easter. If the Big Bunny is smart, he’ll hide an egg or two in there…

Start with 5 Dollar Store buys....(actually, I had the crazy glue already...but, I'll humor you).

Arrange bunnies in a circle...apply glue to ears...stack clear plate (or decoupage/paint as you wish)...Insert jelly beans.....

...And sticky fingers....

Easter Bunny Silhouette

I admit...this is last year's Easter craft. But, I LOVE it, and have yet to decide on this year's craft.

First, I took a photo of Willie's profile against a white wall. Then, I printed it out on a regular paper, and glued it to a sheet of black scrapbook paper.

Next, I used a sharpie pen to add bunny ears to Willie's head.

After the glue has fully dried (don't want to sticky up those scissors), cut around the silhouette, and you're done! I glued mine on a white piece of cardstock....but have yet to do anything else with it! We did use it as our Easter cards last year (scan, save as jpeg, print on notecards).

Maybe, I will do a little something with it this year, to turn it into a lasting Easter decoration....hmmmm....

shamROCK Shirt & Magic Leprechaun Dust!

Leprechaun Dust (Pistachio Instant Pudding Mix)
Add Milk
Put on an Irish Jig, and let the class shake their jars...
Watch the MAGIC work as the mixture magically turns GREEN.

Refrigerate, and have a festive St. Patty's afternoon pudding snack!

He has an obsession with guitars, and I have found great fun in making him fun shirts. Having a boy, I find my dress-up time where I can!

Make You Holla MONDAY....

Welcome to a little something I like to call, "Make you holla MONDAY!" aka - Perfectly practical craft, completed in under $5!

I really struggled with what to blog about on this first REAL craft post! Something under $5...something I need to do anyway...something festive, and related to an upcoming holiday? Ummm.....HELLLLO!...how about all 3!?

First off.....MATERIALS:

Wooden clothespins, you know the ones....99-cent store for 100 of them! I'm using 12 of them...so 12cents.

FREE printable "Absolutely No Pinching" cutouts....um, FREE! (When you sign up for a TOTALLYworthIT email newsletter from HERE.)

HOT GLUE sticks...come on, you already have those!

Green solid (or print if you have it) fabric. I had this on hand, but I will calculate - $1.78/yard at the Good Ol' WallyWorld. Could not have used more than 25 cents worth.

Festive Irish-y ribbon. I got mine at Michael's for $1.50.

PROCESS...

You can pretty much get this from the finished product pic, but here it is:

Glue ribbon on to the clothespin (being sure to tuck around edges. Next, glue on the fabric circle. (You can be as simple as pinking out a simple circle. I chose to cut a fabric strip, hand stitch through one side, and pull to cinch.) Finally, glue on your cardstock print-out. Voila!

Now that I think about it, I guess we can sum up this project like this...

Wooden Clothespins...12 cents

Hot Glue....25 cents

Fabric...25 cents

Ribbon...$1.50

Senorita, Que Bonita...Who's That Girl?

This is me.....Tessa. I am a working mom, crafter, thrifter, shopper, and now a craft/thrift/shop/mom blogger!

This is my husband, Will, aka My Hub Dub. He is not-so-secretly showing his feelings about my need to find (buy) things that I have a distant vision for. OK - in this particular photo, he is really showing his feelings about my like (love) of country music. And, that's our little guy - Little Will, Will-Yummy, Willy Wonka, Willie. We'll get to him later!

I am looking forward to crafting with you, and sharing some of my weird obsessions. Like - why do I have (I mean HAVE) to buy unfinished projects I find at Estate Sales?
